- " Registered [logo] Trademark/ 1/4 lb. Poison/ Ether Squibb/ FOR ANESTHESIA (An Alcohol Derivative)/ Æther ; Ethyl Oxide. As Squibb cans have sometimes been refilled with/ inferior ether, see that the sealing cap is intact. To use, cut out the soft/ metal cap, then stopper with a cork. The Squibb Ether is of one quality/ only- the best that can be made for anesthesia. This can is coated/ internally with copper to preserve the contents against deterioration./ NOTE.- The contents of this can should not be used for anesthesia if/ it has been opened and the ether exposed to the air for some time. CAUTION: Ether is highly inflammable. It should be kept in a cool/ place and remote from lights or fire, and be administered only by day- light or by electric light. When using an actual cautery, remove the ether/ inhaler and cover the patient's face with a wet towel. Antidotes: Artificial/ respiration; oxygen; fresh air. (Can U.S. Pat. 1632309, Seal Pat. Pend.)/ E.R. SQUIBB & SONS OF CANADA, LTD./ MANUFACTURING CHEMISTS TO THE MEDICAL PROFESSION SINCE 1858/ TORONTO, CANADA/ Printed in Canada./ Control: LD 5866/ This label printed in red has been adopted to/ comply with existing laws./ Squibb Ether/ is and always has been made only in the SQUIBB Lab-/ oratories, by the process devised by Dr. E.R. Squibb/ and long since brought to practical perfection. It is/ superior in vital respects to the ether of the U.S.P./ In deciding upon an ether for anesthesia, it should be/ remembered that laboratory tests alone are not suffi-/cient, but long clinical experience must complete the/ evidence of fitness. Therefore, holding in mind the/ important facts of surgical anesthesia, we believe it is/ the duty of every hospital, surgeon and anesthetist, to/ choose that ether which long and wide experience has/ proved to be the one that enables the patient to pass/ through his period of unconsciousness and the post-/ operative crisis with the minimum of danger. In addi-/ tion to this, should be considered the satisfaction to/ the surgeon during and after the operation because/ of such use./ For three-quarters of a century and in millions of/ cases, Squibb Ether has been used by surgeons for/ the safety and comfort of their patients./ E.R. SQUIBB & SONS OF CANADA, LTD." printed on can label. UHN catalogue no. "X977.8.8" printed by hand in black ink on top edge of label.
