The central draft burner, invented c.1883, used a central tube to provide a draft for the flame and a deflector which consisted of another tube, closed and perforated at top and mounted within the centre-draft tube so that some air passed between the tubes to the base of the flame and some sprayed out of the perforations onto the upper part of the flame.
