This geodimeter was acquired from a Canadian branch of the manufacturer known as AGAtronics. Surveying Canada’s extensive and rugged territory has demanded sophisticated science and played a crucial role in the assessment and exploitation of our natural resources. The donor and his family immigrated to Canada in 1952 and moved to British Columbia in 1964. He was commissioned a British Columbia Land Surveyor in 1969 and the artifact was used extensively by him in the province’s Cariboo area until 1978 when he acquired a newer model to replace it. L'arpentage du Canada demande l'utilisation d'une science précise pour l'exploitation de nos ressources naturelles. Le donateur et sa famille ont immigré au Canada en 1952 et ont déménagé en Colombie-Britannique en 1964. Il est devenu un arpenteur-géomètre breveté de la province en 1969. Function

This object uses precision electronics and the known speed of light to measure the distance to a reflecting target for surveying purposes. Cet objet utilise des électroniques précis avec la vitesse de la lumière pour mesurer la distance entre l'utilisateur et une cible réfléchissante.

Technical

Model 6B likely came out around 1969 and was the first one with an orange finish rather than the earlier gray. This artifact represents a shift away from earlier instruments characterized by their mass and heft towards later ones that were so light they inspired the concept of the “total station”: a group of instruments mounted on a single tripod capable of making all of the usual surveying measurements. It was part of the first wave of lighter instruments using transistors. It also made use of of tungsten/mercury vapour lamps but they too would soon be superseded by the introduction of the laser, and then both microwave and infrared technology. Missing

A spare mercury bulb as well as a generator. The original tribrach mount (probably made by Wild) is missing/Une ampoule à vapeur de mercure de rechange et une génératrice. Y manque aussi le trépied original (Avec le manufacturier qui était probablement "Wild").

Finish

An object made of metal that is painted orange and has a cylinder in its middle and is flanked by a rectangle on either side. A black metal handle arches over its top. The front of the artifact has a manufacturer’s mark on its proper left side in white and black lettering on a metal plaque. The base of the object is a circular dial with white lettering on it that helps the object pivot. The base also has three metal feet that are silver. The back of the object has two gauges that has a glass screens that protects them. Five black synthetic buttons and tree metal silver coloured switches are also on the back. A glass lens is also visible in the bottom right corner. A metal plaque with manufacturing information is also attached to the bottom left corner. A silver synthetic cable has two metal adapter pieces that connect the middle of the object to its bottom right side. Un objet fait en métal peinturé orange qui a un cylindre au milieu avec une boite rectangulaire de chaque côté. Une manche en métal de couleur noire sort de son haut. Le devant de l'objet a une marque du fabricateur sur son bon côté gauche en lettrage blanc et noir sur une plaque en métal. La base de l'objet est circulaire et a un cadran avec du lettrage blanc qui aide l'objet à pivoter. La base a aussi trois pieds en métal de couleur argent. Le dos de l'objet deux jauges qui ont un écran en verre qui les protège. Il y a aussi cinq boutons synthétiques de couleur noire et trois interrupteurs de couleur argent fait en métal. Une lentille en verre est visible dans le coin du bas du côté droit. Une plaque du fabricateur est fixée au coin du bas du côté gauche. Un câble synthétique de couleur argent a deux morceaux adaptateurs en métal qui sort du milieu de l'objet et s'attache au bas du côté droit.
