Period
The model arrived new.
Canada
As in the Second World War, the Royal Canadian Navy’s main function during the Cold War was anti-submarine warfare. The potential enemy of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) was now the Soviet navy, or Voyenno Morskoy Flot SSSR, rather than the national-socialist German navy, or Kriegsmarine. The most imposing ship of the Royal Canadian Navy’s fleet between 1957 and 1970 was the HMCS Bonaventure, a Majestic class British light aircraft carrier launched in 1945, but was not completed following the end of the Second World War in August 1945. The Canadian government purchased this ship, until then known under the name HMS Powerful, in April 1952. Heavily modified to include the most recent developments (a steam catapult to launch aircraft, an angled flight deck to facilitate the landing of airplanes, etc.), the HMCS Bonaventure entered service in January 1957. It served with distinction in the Atlantic without participating in any conflict. Between April 1966 and September 1967, the HMCS Bonaventure underwent a refit to extend its career into the mid 1970s. In September 1969, however, the federal government decided to retire its aircraft carriers from service. The HMCS Bonaventure was removed from service in July of 1970 and was scrapped in 1971. A ship model is the only manner in which to present to visitors this important war ship that no longer exists and which, in any case, would have been impossible to preserve or exhibit due to its size (approximately 215 m long and 34.5 m wide). (Ref. 1)
Function
To represent the physical form of a war ship that no longer exists, and that would not have been possible to preserve or exhibit due to its size. (Ref. 1)
Technical
(Ref. 1)

Details

Markings
On the proper front left corner and proper back left corner of the base are two brass-coloured plaques engraved: "HMCS BONAVENTURE/ 1957-65/ Scale: 1:144/ Builder: DAN LINTON"/ On the proper front of the island: "22/ BEWARE OF/ PROPELLERS/ & JET BLAST"/ On the proper back of the island: "22"/ On the deck of the carrier in white numbers, from the proper front to the proper back: "20/ 40/ 60/ 80/ 100/ 120/ 140/ 160/ 180/ 200/ 220/ 240/ 260/ 280/ 300/ 320/ 340/ 360/ 380/ 400/ 420/ 440/ 460/ 480/ 500/ 520/ 540/ 560/ 580/ 600/ 620/ 640"/ At the proper back of the deck, in large white numbers: "22"/ On the proper right side of the hull, on a railing: "BONAVENTURE"/ On the proper right and left of the hull at the proper front, from top to bottom: "XXXIX/ XXXVIII/ XXXVII/ XXXVI/ XXXV/ XXXIV/ XXXIII/ XXXII/ XXXI/ XXX/ XXIX/ XXVIII/ XXVII/ XXVI/ XXV/ XXIV/ XXIII/ XXII/ XXI/ XX/ XIX/ XVIII/ XVII/ XVI/ XV/ XIV/ XIII/ XII"/ The same markings appear at the proper back of the hull, on both sides, however, they end at the bottom at "XIV"/ There are 14 aircraft on the deck of the carrier, and an additional 5 on the base, each marked "NAVY," and each have their own number.
Missing
None apparent.
Finish
The base is a golden brown wood with darker grain, and two brass-coloured plaques affixed to it. The hull of the aircraft carrier is predominantly white (toward the top) and red (down to the bottom) with a black stripe separating them. The island and all the antennae, guns and railings are predominantly white, with a section of island finished black. There are black markings and red maple leaves on the island and small red components around the perimeter of the deck at the railings. The deck is predominantly green and light grey, with yellow stripes and white markings and shapes. The aircraft on the deck and the base are predominantly grey with black or red markings, blue white and red RCAF roundels, and red and white Canadian flags.
Decoration
The aircraft have RCAF roundels and Canadian flags; on the island are red maple leaf designs on the proper front and back.
