Technical

Designed by Ampex engineer George Brettell and first introduced in 1954, the 620 is a high-quality, portable amplified loudspeaker. According to Leslie and Snyder: “To this day, many audio enthusiasts consider the 620 one of the most natural-sounding speaker systems ever made” (2010, p. 8). It pairs with an Ampex 601 tape recorder, as part of a portable “suitcase” unit (see 2013.0666).

Amplifier inserted in a synthetic orange casing. The edges of the casing has a brown / orange leather finish with yellow stitching. The casing has numerous orange rubber pegs to set the amplifier. The amplifier has a fabric beige and brown fabric surface, a grey metal grill with brown discoloration and a brown synthetic panel with black rotating knobs, a silver switch and a white glass bulb.
